A few months after I started my blog, the idea came to me to write a story told in monthly installments. I loved the idea but felt attached to the notion that it should be done over the course of a true calendar year. Finding Lily is a story I’ve been playing with for almost two years, and I’m excited to invite you to join me as Lily and Ruby’s stories unfold.
Lily, an aspiring attorney with the world at her fingertips, is left devastated by an unexpected divorce and the dizzying realization that the attorney-life isn’t for her. Left to question every aspect of her existence, she turns to the only person she trusts to find the answers: her mother.
Ruby, a well-established businesswoman with everything to lose, is infuriated by the actions of her ex-son-in-law and fears her daughter might be repeating her own mistakes. She provides the only advice she believes will save Lily from walking down the same dark path she once walked: take time to learn who you are and what you really want.
Inspired by Ruby’s advice, Lily decides to throw caution to the wind and take a one-month road-trip to whatever place calls her name. This is not what Ruby had in mind. In an effort to prevent Lily from throwing away everything she’s worked for, Ruby unleashes a brutal rant about Lily’s life choices, driving her away.
Lily decides it’s time to learn who she is when only her voice is left to call the shots. She disconnects her phone, lets her hair down, puts the car in drive, and sets off on the adventure of a lifetime.
Several days pass without word from Lily, and the gut-wrenching feeling that something is wrong fills Ruby’s chest. She has to go after her daughter. Risking her business and an on-again-off-again relationship with a successful accountant, Ruby embarks on her own adventure to find her daughter. Following only the crumbs that Lily leaves in her social media posts, Ruby’s adventure leads her on a journey into the weird, beautiful, and scary world that exists beyond the reaches of her comfort zone.
Told in twelve parts (one part per month), this story explores the meaning of unconditional love, the power of true freedom, and the unfiltered vulnerability required to truly discover yourself.
